Freedom Then and Now
Partner organization:
Zespol Szkol Ogolnoksztalcacych im. Pawla Stalmacha, Wisla, PolandThematic area: Heritage and remembrance, Democratic values and civic virtues
The project offered students a powerful and comprehensive exploration of human rights through creative expression, historical reflection, and critical discussion. By engaging in interactive workshops students understood that human rights are not universal nor guaranteed. They developed critical thinking skills and expressed their reflections creatively through acrostic poems, photography, and posters focused on the theme Freedom Then and Now.Visits to historical sites such as a Jewish cemetery, a former prison, and Auschwitz deepened students’ understanding of past injustices, religious persecution, and the consequences of totalitarian regimes. Meetings with community representatives and experts - such as members of the Church and a psychologist working with Ukrainian refugees - provided personal and emotional insight into both historical and contemporary human rights issues.
Through presentations, group work, and guided reflection, the project fostered empathy, civic awareness, and a strong appreciation for freedom. It successfully encouraged students to view human rights not only as historical themes but as living values that require active protection and responsibility in today's world.
